You may also try making your own smoothie recipe or choose a recipe from other sources. If you’re just starting out with making smoothies then you may want to choose a healthy smoothie recipe that is not made with purely vegetables, but requires other ingredients like fruits, seeds, spices or nuts. This will make the taste of your smoothie more acceptable to your taste buds. Opt for smoothie recipes which are made with healthy and not unhealthy ingredients.

You may choose to use a smoothie recipe based on what ingredients you have available in your home. If you don’t have the ingredients needed to make the smoothie recipe you’ve chosen, then go shopping. Remember to opt to buy organic ingredients.

Step 3: Prepare Ingredients

After choosing your smoothie recipe, selecting and shopping for ingredients, go ahead and gather your ingredients. Best Way to Make SmoothiesWash the ingredients that needs to be washed thoroughly. Remove the stems and bad leaves from the ingredients with leaves. For the ingredients with seeds, remove all seeds. Chop ingredients if necessary. You may choose to freeze whatever ingredient/s ahead of time. When you freeze ingredients the less likely you will need to add ice to your smoothie. Consuming smoothies made with cold ingredients are better tasting than consuming smoothies made with room temperature ingredients. And you may not need to put your smoothie in the refrigerator to chill before consuming.

Step 4: Add Liquid to Blender

From your chosen recipe, add the stated liquid form to your blender. Best Way to Make SmoothiesThe liquid you decide to use in your smoothie all depends on the recipe you chose. Liquid may be in the form of water, coconut water, milk, yogurt, kefir, pure organic fruit juices, infused water or cooled tea. By adding the liquid first to your blender, you not only enhance the taste of your smoothies but doing so reduces the pressure on your blender’s motor and prevents the ingredients from sticking onto the blender’s blade. The more liquid you use, the less thick your smoothie will be. By using less liquid your smoothie mixture will be thicker. So if you like your smoothies thick, sparingly use liquid or if you like your smoothies watery, then add more liquid.

Step 5: Add Base to Blender

Best Way to Make SmoothiesThe base of the smoothie should consists of ingredient/s which will give your smoothie its taste, texture and creaminess. The base is normally in fruit form. Fruits such as banana, mango and avocado makes a good base. Bananas are mostly used as the base in smoothies as it works well with any smoothie recipe or flavor combination. The base will help to determine the creamy consistency of your smoothie.

Step 6: Add Fruits and/or Vegetables to Blender

Increase the nutritional value of your smoothie by adding the fruits and/or vegetables from your smoothie recipe into the blender. You may use fresh or frozen fruits or vegetables. Best Way to Make SmoothiesOpt for fresh fruits and vegetables first, but if the fruit/s or vegetable/s in your smoothie recipe is not available fresh then you may use the frozen option. Add softer fruits, vegetables or thawed ingredients to the blender first and add tougher fruits and vegetables last. If you choose to use ice, add them at this stage. If you are just starting out with smoothies you may want to use less percentage of vegetables than fruits. Start off using smaller amounts of vegetables then increase the amount of vegetables you use in your smoothies once you start acquiring the taste.

Step 7: Add Extra Ingredients

There are certain ingredients which add an extra zest to your smoothies. Add ingredients such as spices (vanilla, cinnamon, cayenne pepper, nutmeg etc.), herbs (cacao, chia seeds, flaxseeds, maca, superfoods etc.), nuts or natural sweeteners.  Best Way to Make SmoothiesNatural sweeteners should be used in moderation. You may choose to use natural sweeteners if you’re just starting out with smoothies and you want to enhance the taste. If you’re trying to lose weight, do try to avoid using natural sweeteners. All these ingredients are all great options to make your smoothies delicious while providing you with additional nutrients. These extra ingredients will sure make your smoothies more appealing and provide it with an interesting flavor.

Step 8: Blend

Start the blending process and ensure that all the ingredients are well combined and blended with each other. Blend until desired consistency is reached. Blending time should typically be between 30 to 60 seconds, depending on the recipe you are preparing. Best Way to Make SmoothiesFeel free to add more ingredients to your blender even if your smoothie recipe does not state it. If your smoothie is too thick, add more of the liquid you used in step 4. If your smoothie texture is too watery, then add more of your base ingredient/s mentioned in step 5. You may also add more ingredients if after conducting a taste test you are not satisfied with the taste. Add some more fruit or natural sweetener, if your smoothie is not as tasty as expected or if bitter. If you add any ingredients at this stage, do blend again until desired consistency is reached. Repeat process if needed.

Step 9: Serve and Enjoy

Best Way to Make SmoothiesServe your smoothie right away. You may sprinkle certain ingredients on finished smoothie. Ingredients such as nuts, fruits or seeds. You may place smoothie in refrigerator and serve when chilled. Consuming a chilled smoothie taste so much better than consuming a warm smoothie. If you have any leftover smoothie, place it in your refrigerator or freezer until you’re ready to consume it. Once you’re ready to consume your smoothie, drink it directly from your cup or use a straw. Sip slowly and enjoy every drop.

Perfectly made healthy smoothies are creamy, tasty and can be made in just a few steps. You’ll find that these steps will help you obtain consistent results no matter the smoothie recipe you’re making. 1. You are right that making your own smoothies is one of the best ways to stay healthy. You cannot go to Jamba Juice or a different juice bar. It is important to make them at home. I never knew all the steps to make smoothies, so I appreciate you for breaking down all the steps. It is nice to know that it does not require much to make a smoothie.

I do have a question though. Out of all the smoothie recipes you have tried, which one is your favorite? I do not usually make smoothies, so I want my first one to be the very best.

Also, I have one last question. How long does it usually take to make one? I am a college student at UCSC, so I am quite busy, especially this time of year. I look forward to hearing your answers to my questions.

Thank you for sharing and I hope you make it a great day!

    1. Well Alex, I don’t have a favorite smoothie recipe but I love to use berries, superfoods and milk in my smoothies. I have some smoothie recipes here on my site which you can try. Go here to view the smoothie recipes.
Smoothies are easy to prepare. Once you prepare you ingredients, you can make a smoothie within 30-60 seconds.

I wish you all the best in your studies.

  2. Hey Sarah, great post! Thanks for promoting smoothies – they are so much better than juicing or other high-sugar options, and they offer exceptional ways to get more fruit and veggies into the diet. I love the great detail you provide here, covering so much of the process, ingredients and equipment. With this much help, everybody should enjoy these healthy drinks.

I’m curious about your ‘liquids first’ approach, and I will try it. I generally do liquids last, as I expect them to pick up more liquid by partially thawing the many frozen ingredients in my smoothies.

I have a couple suggestions that your readers might appreciate to make the daily smoothie process more convenient. I freeze some fresh fruit and green leafy veggies for my smoothies so that I can use cubes of frozen watermelon or pineapple to form the base while keeping the cost low and spoilage problems to a minimum. It does require an occasional big project to cut up and freeze these big fruits or bunches of kale or bok choi, but this is much better than dealing with cleaning and culling them daily while losing so much to spoilage. Fresh is nice, but freezing preserves 98% or more of the nutrients, and keeps the smoothie cold and appealing. My big blender would heat up the smoothie if it weren’t for all the frozen ingredients.
Also, I recommend probiotics like kefir and raw local honey (in moderation) which I use on most days. I also recommend the meat of fresh limes or fresh organic lime juice to add tanginess. Kiwifruits also help with this, and as I enjoy tangy green smoothies, I use both. On days when I want to keep it low calorie, I do need to add some stevia to take the edge off, though.

Thanks again for this great post,

    1. Thanks for the suggestions Steve.
I do have posts where I talked about freezing ingredients to extend their shelf life or to make smoothies creamier. I also do have posts where I talked about fruits and vegetables to use in smoothies.

You can browse through my website and you’ll find a lot of articles which you may find useful.
I really appreciate your suggestions and I think my readers will too. Thanks Steve.
